I would whole-heartedly recommend this book for preteen and teen readers. If you know the author's style you'll know exactly what I mean. I'd describe it as warty, overrun with common sense, and more absurd than fantastical. I often dive into fairy tale retellings for the ethereal beauty of them and if that's what you're after - sexy beauty and fantastical sexy drama - this is not quiiiite that. I LOVED it but before purchasing I recommend that you are familiar with the author's "flavor", if you will. I've followed this author's artwork for more than a decade and have long enjoyed her Twitter screeds but this is the first book I've read/listened to by her. ![]()

For instance, if his wife had a tragic death, and then his response to it is that he’s emotionally closed off he’s emotionally frozen.’ And Mitch and Paul went, ‘That’s something!’ So we had written that down real quickly as a note.” Freeze and give him some gravitas, that’s what we should be doing with all of those secondary characters. The fairy tale that is simultaneously elaborated and deconstructed is about Mireille Duval Jameson, whose supposedly perfect life is irrevocably altered after she is kidnapped by gunmen. The novel’s first sentence frames it within the fairytale genre, suggesting an attention to form that will be maintained throughout: “Once upon a time in a far-off land … I was kidnapped by a gang of fearless yet terrified young men with so much impossible hope beating inside their bodies it burned their very skin and strengthened their will right through their bones” (1). ![]() ![]() She explores the myth of return, the fraught relationship between generations navigating the cultural shifts from homeland to hostland, cross-cultural marriage, and the gaping chasm between the rich and the poor in Haiti. This time I was able to really focus and listen and I picked up so much I missed the first time and also was able to process some of the concepts more thoroughly. So I didn't have to stop reading and go do independent research on a specific topic or person, just so I could keep up, as I did the first time I read it. The book started me on a quest to learn more about Scotland, it's history and it's contributions to civilization so when I read the audiobook version I was much more familiar with the content. Much of the history and the philosophical concepts introduced in the book were fairly new to me when I originally read it. This is one of the few that I have read that I think shines in both formats. There are so many books I have read in paper form and later in audiobook format and usually I am either disappointed in the audiobook, or I find it much improved over the original version. So I was quite excited to read it in audio format as soon as I could. ![]() It is a book I have been waiting for in audio format and it was finally published in audio in August of 2016. ![]() I first read this book in 2002, shortly after publishing and found it so informative and well written, I have referred to parts of it several times in the past. ![]() 5/13/2023 0 Comments In the Wreckage by Hailey Turner![]() ![]() In this version of the future, a deadly chemical agent called Splice – which kills 95% of the people it infects – has led to the creation of a small number of metahumans (the other 5%), changing their DNA and giving them enhanced powers. ![]() Set around 250 years in the future, In the Wreckage is the first book in the Metahuman Files, and plunges listeners straight in to the thick of things, introducing the central characters and the concept of metahumans in the course of an action-packed battle scene. I like sci-fi in movies and on TV, although I don’t read (or listen to) much of it but I picked up In the Wreckage mostly because I’m on a narrator glom – and because I’m on a bit of a m/m military romance/romantic suspense kick, so this sounded like a good fit. ![]() “Huh?
